Fundraising Tips & Tricks

How do I ask for donations?

add remove

Tell friends, family, and colleagues that you're doing the September Squat Challenge to improve your fitness and to support muscular dystrophy research that will help everyone enjoy healthy muscles!

Ask them to donate and support this amazing cause. There's so many ways to ask using tools in your dashboard after you sign up:

1. Use the share link to share your page or post direct to social media
2. Send an email to your contacts - we provide a draft email to make it super simple
3. In person is powerful, and you can share the QR code on your dashboard for them to scan with their phone to make donating easy

What is a self-donation and why is it important?

add remove

When you make a donation to your own page, it's called a self-donation. This helps you get off $0 and lets people know you care enough about the cause to donate yourself, which inspires them to donate too!

How can I improve my fundraising page to get more donations?

add remove

Make sure you customise your fundraising page, because friends and family want to know why this cause and challenge is important to you. Is it for fun and fitness? Then tell them you need the motivation! If it's to raise as much money as possible to help give life to muscles, then tell them why muscles mater to you!

You can personalise page text, profile image and add images of your efforts and blog post updates on your progress through your dashboard.

The more you update and share on social media, the more people see how hard you're working and they'll want to support you!

What if I don't want to share on social media or raise money online?

add remove

It's ok to do it your way! If you can sign up online, then it's easy for us to collect your details. But if you'd like to call or email, we can register you as a fundraiser and share ways to donate offline. Phone 02 8007 7037 or email admin@fshdglobal.org

The more you update and share on social media, the more people see how hard you're working and they'll want to support you!

Getting Started

Who can register?

add remove

Anyone over 16 (those under 16 need parental permission). Because this is a physical challenge, we recommend that you check with your health practitioner to make sure it's safe for you to do squats. If you need to modify them for your safety, then that's ok. Be sure to set a personal squat goal that's safe and achievable for you. If you can't squat at all, you can still donate and help us spread awarenss. Thank you!

What if I can't do a squat?

add remove

You should get the OK from your doctor before taking on a fitness challenge, so if you can't do a squat then don't do the physical stuff. You can still encourage others to sign up or donate directly to help.

What if I sign up later in September?

add remove

No worries! Some people are only committing to 1 or 2 weeks. Do what you can during September. Some days you may be sore and need to take a break, so if you don't meet your squat target don't worry. What matters is raising awarness and vital funds for research.

How do I create a Team?

add remove

Each Team member needs to sign up and create an individual profile. One person from your Team can log into their dashboard and select "Create a Team," located just above the "My Achievements" section. Set up the fundraising page and make sure your team page settings allow anyone to join your team. The person who sets up the team will be designated as the team captain. Once your team is created, you can invite others to join your team by sharing the link in the "My Team" section on your dashboard.

What makes a good Team?

add remove

Teams can be be composed of workplace colleagues, friends or family. They are a great way to stay motivated and make your challenge a social rather than solo one.

Each Team member needs to set up individual page with their own fundraising goal, then totals raised are pooled under the Team page to help you rank higher on the Leaderboards. Nothing like a bit of friendly competition!

Perhaps your Team could even raise the $6,000 to fund a Clinical Trial Passport! There's no telling what you can accomplish together.

The Cause

Why squats?

add remove

Most of those with FSHD muscular dystrophy can't do a squat or any of the other things many people take for granted. Show your support and use your muscles for them!

FSHD Global's Squat Challenge (Muscles for Muscles) began in 2020, and everyone from althletes to schoolchildren have joined in to raise funds for research. Thanks to a fantastic kickoff from the Bulldogs in Accor Stadium, we're running a September Squat Challenge in 2026!

Why do you ask a Team to aim for 3000 squats in total during September?

add remove

In honour of the 3000+ Australians with FSHD muscular dystrophy who can't do a squat. Each squat performed represents one person who can't do what you can do and who needs your support. That's a powerful motivator to join us in helping to find a cure!

Where does the money I raise go?

add remove

All funds raised are tax-deductible and go directly to FSHD Global Research Foundation, an award-winning Australian Registered Charity based in Sydney. It is a patient-led organisation, founded by Bill Moss AO, and has a laser focus on finding a cure for FSHD and enabling muscle regeneration for everyone. Learn more at fshdglobal.org
